This spring, Articulture and partners are launching #OpenOut – with a pot of £15K for under-represented artists to develop and tour new outdoor arts in Wales. Got an idea? It’s simple – just contact us to say hello.
The spirit of this opportunity is ‘opening out’ – opening out new places, ideas, possibilities and stepping outdoors together.
This opportunity is for artists wanting to work in the Welsh language, those who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Colour and people who are D/deaf or Disabled. We are interested in hearing from those who work outdoors, and those who would like to for the first time. The lead artist must be Wales based.
We welcome ideas that –
* Take place in ‘public space’ at the venue and festival partner locations
* Can be enjoyed by a bilingual audience – Welsh and English
* Think about the challenges and opportunities of social distancing and weather
* Bring people from different backgrounds to collaborate together
* Can be created for a budget of up to £5,000
You can visit the Articulture website to see images and films of outdoor art work we have helped create in the past – https://articulture-wales.co.uk/book/
In addition to the £5,000, Articulture will work with the artists chosen to provide support at each stage of creating and touring the work. This can include creation, producing, marketing, and production.
Partners and their locations –
* Beyond the Border Festival, Carmarthenshire
* Theatr Clwyd, Mold
* Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
* Pontio, Bangor
* The National Eisteddfod of Wales
* Aberystwyth Arts Centre
* The Riverfront, Newport
* Taliesin (Dance Days), Swansea
* Ffwrnes, Theatrau Sir Gâr, Llanelli
* AWEN Trust, location TBC
* The Welfare Ystradgynlais
* The Borough, Abergavenny
These partners work together as a group called the ‘Wales Outdoor Arts Consortium’, which is managed by Articulture. They want to support more art happening outdoors in each of their locations, for their audiences to take part in and enjoy.
The plan is for the three new outdoor works to tour to the partners’ locations in 2021 and 2022. The dates are not yet fixed, and will be worked out with the partners when ideas are developed.

You need to do this by end of Friday 23 April at the latest.
But be sure to contact us as early as you can before this, so we can help you develop your idea.
What happens next?
The Articulture team can support you to develop your idea, so it’s ready to share with the partners by Friday 7th May.
The partners will then look at your idea, along with others. They will make a choice together about which ideas to develop
If your idea is chosen by the partners, you will start developing your idea with support from Articulture from Monday 17th May.
Touring may be possible from the beginning of July – depending on COVID restrictions
#OpenOut2021 is supported by the Arts Council of Wales, Articulture and the Wales Outdoor Arts Consortium.
